Happy Birthday Ghana!

Saturday was Independence Day here in Ghana, and the country turned 53 years old. Because the holiday fell on a Saturday, this weekend is a long weekend. Fine by me!!!

Last week was pretty tame. Mostly filled with a lot of work! I'm sorry for being boring-I almost didn't write a blog entry because I'm so boring, but I've been nagged!

On the bright side, and totally unrelated to Ghana, I have an interview with Rocky View right after I get home! It's becoming very clear that I am almost done being a student and the "real world" is waiting. Weird. In 4 weeks I will be DONE university, and my work here!!!

Another interesting (or perhaps just gross) thing that happened this week was the big cloud of doom that I encountered on my way home from work on Thursday. I'm not sure what was burning, but it did not make my hour of sitting in traffic pleasant at all! It smelt very chemically--yuck. I thought I was free from it at home, but a couple hours later the lovely fumes worked their way to my neighborhood and into my apartment. This contributed to my brewing dislike of Accra and need to get out! Keep your fingers crossed that this car finally gets sold on Tuesday so that my colleague Tom can be free to come to KoSa (beach) next weekend. It would be too much of a hassle to go on my own with Ama and public transport, and I'm too cheap to take George all that way!!

I managed to get 1 run in this week, but then discovered massive blisters. They are gone now, so hopefully I can get at least 2 in next week!

Ama's potty training is still going slow, but she's only had one poop accident in 3 weeks! She still can't seem to get the pee thing. Oh well. I finally had to buy diapers, and managed to find some for a semi reasonable price. Note to shoppers-cheap diapers are cheap for a reason! BUT I'm too cheap to pay close to 50 dollars for a pack of 30 huggies or pampers. I just won't do it!

On Friday Ama's school did an independence day "performance." Her class sang "Happy Birthday" to Ghana. I tried posting a video, with no luck. Perhaps when I get home! But trust me, its was very cute! The teachers did most of the singing, while the kids waved their flags.

When we went to the pool this weekend I was dismayed to find out that the price had increased from 8 to 15GHc. There is no such thing as an incremental price increase here-people see no problem with doubling the price of something. At least there won't be many more pool weekend!

We are both still doing well, although to be honest I'm counting down the days until Pam comes (30)! I am very ready for school to be over (no offense Susan-don't fail me!) and to experience Ghana outside of Accra. I will be very happy to say goodbye to March.

This is an example of how Ama likes to go to bed now. She needs her "flashlight" or more accurately, my head-lamp around her neck (I take it off to make sure it doesn't strangle her, don't worry!), her Bo(the dog pictured), puppy and Lucy, as well as an assortment of flavors of the day like a plastic horse, or most recently a hippo. She also will tell me she wants to "sleep by self" and tries to push me off the bed. Oh the love... Perhaps she needs room for her friends.
